Even at the time of the Roman Empire Dorf Tirol in today’s Burggrafenamt Meran was a very well-known place. After the Roman settlements in Dorf Tirol Schloss Tirol was built in 1140 which is where the name of the town comes from. The state of Tirol gets its name from the current tourist board in Südtirol. Until 1420 Schloss Tirol was the seat of power of the state and today still towers on a high plateau above the spa town of Meran.
